Can You Deny Me Still?

A meeting long overdue
in the mystery of the shadows
dancing on the walls
in a newly interrupted happy home

Your asking peculiar questions
the activities and directions
to an event you weren't invited to
What are you even doing here?

You do not exist here
those memories were long ago
shut down and tossed away
almost like they were never there.

Your eyes are cold and hard
as if these words don't come by choice
but are unpleasantly forced from your body,
I am only in shock.

Your stare bored into my soul
as I give you the answers
that are flowing without control
until it slips off my tongue in old habit

"Dear"
but without time for a subtle apology
as if it were written in front of me
the favor is returned
"baby," you seem a little more real now.

The begging calls of baby birds
are whispering uncontrolably
falling in rhythm with music
that stopped in my mind ages ago.

They search to bring me back into consciousness
the confident woman who can take on the world
but i no longer hear them
for your very presence has consumed me.

A meeting long overdue
in the mystery of the shadows
dancing on the walls
in a newly interrupted happy home.

Faint footsteps above bring me back
A tiny, dark child softly singing to herself
Can you hear her?
Can you deny me still?
